  • Christmas Wreath

The Merrill Community has "shined" again.  After bring asked why the Christmas Wreath is not up this year, the people of Merrill came through!  Thank you to everyone that came out and help put it up this year.  Do you ask why do we have a Christmas Wreath and not a Christmas Tree.  Here is a little history that many do not know.

There is is little home-grown Merrill company here called Mitchel Metal Products. They are the 'kings' of wreath form manufacturing, sending their products world-wide. These wreath forms are made in many different shapes/forms and are manufactured year round. What people in Merrill don't understand and the owners of Mitchell Metal don't toot their horn about is that they donate wreath forms to Arlington National Cemetery every year. Yes, all those wreaths on the graves of our fallen are made possible, in part, thanks to Merrill's very own Mitchell Metal Products!

So when we were no longer able to put up all the small trees (due to safety concerns) we thought what an awesome way to celebrate the season by honoring one of our own businesses, the 'king' of wreath forms, and celebrating the donation they make to our nations hero's every year. So Mitchell Metal Products made the wreath and donated it us. This wreath and this business should be respected. We are honored to own this wreath and what it represents - a Merrill business with a heart of gold and one that represents our community by honoring our military hero's year after year.

                MFD’s Keep the Wreath Green

The “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign has been part of the Merrill Fire Department since the early 1980’s. The campaign was started as a way to remind residents of the importance of fire safety especially during the holiday season. The wreath is located on the northeast wall of the fire station near the firefighter memorial. The campaign starts on Thanksgiving Day and goes through New Year’s Day. The wreath starts out with all green bulbs which are changed to red when the Merrill Fire Department responds to reportable structure fires. You will notice 1 white bulb at the top of the wreath which is used to signify fallen firefighters and new this year is 1 blue bulb which is to signify fallen law enforcement officers.

The purpose of the wreath is to give a visual reminder of the importance of fire safety during the holiday season and to remind residents to use extra caution to prevent fires. A house fire is traumatic no matter what time of the year; however, they can be even more devastating when they happen during the holiday season. A few helpful tips for doing your part in preventing fires are keeping your tree watered, not having open flames or candles near flammable materials, being careful not to overload electrical outlets along with not leaving cooking processes unattended. The Merrill Fire Department would also like to remind everyone to make sure they have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the home.

The Merrill Fire Department is ready to respond 365 days a year 24 hours a day however preventing fires is our ultimate goal. Please do your part to keep it a safe and happy holiday season.

The Merrill Chamber has teamed up with Centergy along with Adams County, North Wood County, Portage County, Marathon County and South Wood County to create Inspire Central Wisconsin.  We have teamed up with the local schools and have gotten on board with Career Cruising program.  Career Cruising is a program that school provide for students of what jobs are available in the community with businesses that have registered with Inspire.

Inspire helps by using the Career Cruising platform that is used in many schools, to help students explore their options, interests and aspirations through a variety of activities. The Inspire program then provides a platform that engages community volunteers that act as mentors, business owners that provide valuable educational and career data. Eventually the object is to add work based learning through career fairs, shadow days, mentoring and apprenticeships. An important fact is that this program can level the playing field by providing people of all backgrounds, in all areas of the state, equal access to mentors and relevant employers.

For more information on this program, click on the logo or contact the Merrill Chamber 715-536-9474 or email manager@merrillchamber.org
